Market Day

Tuesday is market day in our house.  There’s nothing really special about why Tuesday is the market day other than the largest deliveries of fresh produce arrive on Tuesday and Friday mornings at the market that I shop at.  Of course, when I say “market”, I don’t mean the clean, nicely manicured, air conditioned market with music overhead, lots of lights and a shopping cart to tote all our soon-to-be purchases in.  I mean the dirty, fly-swarming, rat-infested market where we get our fresh fruit and vegetables.  It is one of the cleanest of the “markets” in our town… but then again, that may not be saying a whole lot since every so often, bubonic plague has crept up at one of our other markets.

I’ve been shopping at this market and from many of the same sellers since 2001.  It’s been a joy to be in relationship with these women from the time before I was married until now… married almost 10 years and 3 kids later.

Although I don’t typically enjoy shopping… the heat, the flies, juggling a toddler and bags of heavy produce, not to mention the bleaching of the produce when we get home…. I do love the sight of this every Tuesday!

lettuce, pineapple, basil, mint, cilantro, parsley, bananas, combavas, limes, tomatoes, papaya, carrots, bell peppers, zucchini, cucumber, peaches, plums, mangoes, green beans, artichokes, lychees and melon…yummmm!

We feel blessed to 1. live in a country that has this kind of bounty, 2. have the financial means to buy this assortment of produce and 3. manage to eat all this deliciousness every week!!!

Speaking of which, our fridge is nearly empty– I’m thankful it’s Tuesday tomorrow!
